Course Overview
The Eduqas GCSE English Language course equips students with the essential skills to understand, analyse, and create a wide range of texts. Throughout the course, students engage with fiction and non-fiction writing from different periods, exploring themes, language techniques, and structural features.
Students develop the ability to read critically and respond thoughtfully, while also honing their writing skills for various purposes and audiences. The course fosters confident communication, critical thinking, and creativity - skills that are valuable both inside and outside the classroom.
Exams
Assessment is through two written exams, each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes. Paper 1 focuses on fiction and imaginative writing, including reading comprehension and writing a creative piece. Paper 2 covers non-fiction texts, both reading and writing, requiring students to analyse persuasive and transactional texts and produce a piece of writing such as a speech, letter, or article. The exams test skills in textual analysis, comparison, synthesis, and composition.
Common Challenges
Many students find it difficult to identify and analyse language and structural techniques effectively, often missing subtleties in tone, mood, and authorial intent. Writing tasks can be challenging, especially when adapting style and tone to suit different audiences and purposes. Time management in exams is another hurdle, as students sometimes struggle to plan and proofread their responses within the time limit.
